My journey from Ukraine through the Carpathians into Romania

Description

This is a personal account of a difficult journey from Ukraine through the Carpathian region and into Romania. I am sharing the experience because many people imagine such a journey as a simple sequence of roads and checkpoints, while the reality involved uncertainty, changing plans, physical exhaustion and a constant need to make practical decisions.

I had to prepare with incomplete information. I thought about documents, food, water, communications, transport and where I might be able to rest. Some parts of the route went according to plan and others changed at short notice. The psychological side was at least as difficult as the physical journey because I never knew exactly what the next few hours would look like.

The Carpathian section was especially demanding because the terrain, weather and lack of familiar surroundings made ordinary decisions more complicated. I learned quickly that a route that looks straightforward on a map may be completely different in reality.

Once I reached Romania, the feeling was not immediately one of complete relief. There were still practical questions about accommodation, communication, money and what to do next. I had to switch mentally from simply getting through the journey to planning the next stage of my life.

I can describe the preparation, the mistakes I made, the things I carried, how I dealt with uncertainty and what I would prepare differently if I had to make a similar journey again.

This is a personal historical account, not a recommendation for attempting an unsafe route or bypassing legal border procedures. Conditions, regulations and border arrangements can change. I am sharing what happened to me and the practical lessons I personally took from the experience.
