What helped me finally become comfortable with my singing voice

Description

I did not start singing because I thought I had a naturally impressive voice. Quite the opposite. For a long time I avoided singing in front of other people because I disliked the sound of my own voice and assumed that good singers were simply born with something I did not have.

I started practicing because I wanted to understand whether I could actually improve. In the beginning I focused too much on reaching high notes and copying singers whose voices were completely different from mine. That produced a lot of tension and very little progress. Eventually I began paying more attention to breathing, posture, pitch, warm-ups and the way I was actually using my voice.

One of the most useful changes was learning to practice regularly for shorter periods instead of trying to compensate for missed days with long sessions. I also started recording myself. At first I hated listening to the recordings, but they showed me things I could not notice while singing: where I was going flat, where I was forcing the sound and which parts were becoming easier.

Over several years I became much more comfortable singing both alone and in front of other people. I learned that improvement was not a straight line and that some days the voice simply did not cooperate. I also learned that copying another singer is not necessarily the best way to find your own sound.

I can share the exercises and practice habits that were useful in my own journey, how I approached pitch and breathing, how I dealt with stage nerves and how I gradually became more confident. I can also talk about the mistakes that wasted the most time for me.

This is a personal learning experience, not a medical or professional assessment of anyone's voice. If you are beginning to sing and want to compare your experience with someone who started without much confidence, I can describe what worked for me and what did not.
